Middleton
in Teesdale
At
the heart of Teesdale is the small town of Middleton in Teesdale, a
market town with plenty of green, open spaces.
 |
The town
expanded in the 19th century when the London Lead Company moved it's
northern headquarters here from Northumberland.
North of the town are a number of mines which can still be seen from
the road and public footpaths. These mines are on the Raby
Castle
Estate and access to explorers is restricted.
A railway line running north from Barnard Castle terminated at
Middleton before it was closed as part of the Beeching Axe.
The town is on the Pennine Way.
