Cowshill Hotel and Village
   
Village near the top of Weardale in Co. Durham.  It is west of the source of the River Wear at Wearhead.  There is a large pub
here, the Cowshill Hotel but that has been closed lately.  Bridge End Cottage is a fortified farmhouse known as a bastle or
bastille house.  They are a common sight in the Anglo - Scottish border area and were built to defend against raids by
border reivers, raiders of both Scottish and English nationality.
The local war memorial commemorates the ten men who lost their lives in the two World Wars.  The 1912 church here is
dedicated to St. Thomas and there is also a village hall.
