BROUGH
Brough Brough is a large village on the A66 trans-Pennine road not far from Kirkby Stephen. There was a Roman fort, Verterae, hereand nearby the ruins of Brough Castle, dating from the 11th century can be visited. The castle is maintained by English Heritage. A local tradition is that a burning holly tree would be carried through Brough followed by a brass band on the Twelfth Night 5th of January). When the flames go out the locals will bring the tree to a pub where the party would continue until the early hours of the morning. In recent years ash trees have been used. Nearby Augill Castle, built in 1841 is now a hotel and the church of St. Michael has an impressive tower dating from the Norman period. A farmers' market is held on the third Saturday of every month in the Memorial Hall and an annual agricultural show takes place every August. BACK |
