Bowes Museum

Housed in an impressive and beautiful chateau-like building, the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle houses a sizable collection of decorative and fine arts.  Thousands of articles are on display here from fashion and textiles to ceramics, furniture and art. The highlight of the collection is a mesmerising mechanical silver swan dating from the 1770's and contains three clockwork mechanisms, one of which plays musical tunes.
Themed exhibitions take place at the Museum, advertised on lampost banners in the town and on the website.
There is plenty of activities for children with the museum catering for schools and families with courses specialising in creative arts, painting and printing.
After touring the Museum you can relax in it's extensive gardens or have a meal in Café Bowes and visit the shop.
You can buy day tickets but it is a good idea to purchase a membership ticket which will give you unlimited entry to the Museum and it's exhibitions for thirteen months.
