Near Barnard Castle
on the A66 trans-Pennine road is Bowes, a village built around the
medieval Bowes Castle. Once part of

the historic
North Riding of Yorkshire, Bowes was moved into Country
Durham as a result of the Local Government Act of 1972 which saw the
county boundaries of Englang change on April 1st, 1974.
Bowes Castle is built on the site of a Roman Fort. Today it
is possible
to view the remains of the castle during daylight hours, admission free.
The Roman name for Bowes was Lavatrae.
The church here is dedicated to St. Giles and there is one pub in the
village, The Ancient Unicorn, a 17th century coaching inn which
hosted Charles Dickens when he toured the area while seeking
inspiration for Nicholas
