the county seat of Westmorland, a county that was abolished in the 1974
shake-up of local government, the market town is best known for the
hosting of it's annual Horse Fair. Held in the first week of
June, gypsies and other members of the travelling community travel to
Appleby to trade their horses. The fair originated during the reign of Henry II in the 12th century.
