The main volunteer rescue organisation for the mines of the North Pennines and the Lake District the Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit.  Set up in the 1980's as a separate team within the Lake District Mountain Accidents Association, COMRU specializes exclusively with mine incidents and is made up of volunteers from mountain rescue teams, cavers and mine explorers and are on hand to deal with emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

COMRU's first call-out was to assist a prospector who had got trapped in a mine in the Caldbeck Fells and their most recent was to assist two men who got stuck in High Skears Mine in Teesdale in April 2021.  Call-outs for COMRU are rare but they are available to assist in areas outside Cumbria and the North Pennines in other parts of the UK as well as the Isle of Man.

COMRU are affiliated to the Lake District Search & Mountain Rescue Association and the British Cave Rescue Council.
