NENTHEAD MINES

Nenthead is home to an extensive system of mines where lead, silver, zinc and other minerals were once mined between the early 18th century and the 1960's. Most of the mines today are easily accessible and are frequently visited by mines explorers, cavers and other outdoor groups. Popular with properly equipped explorers are Brownley Hill Mine, Smallcleugh Mine and Rampgill Mine. The mines are managed by Nenthead Mines Conservation Society which operates a visitor centre and offers trips into Carrs Mine for members of the public on certain open days, usually at Bank Holiday weekends.

The next public open day will hopefully be Easter Sunday 17th April (coronavirus restrictions permitting).
