GARRIGILL
Garrigill Once home to a thriving mining community of over 1000 people, Garrigill is now a quiet village at near the source of the River South Tyne. There are two waterfalls nearby, Ashgill Force and Thortergill Force, the latter of which can no longer be visited by walkers as the current landowners have restricted access. There were two pubs here, the Old Fox and the George & Dragon. The Old Fox has been closed since the mid 20th century and the George & Dragon is currently closed having experience prolonged periods of closure since 2009. Hopefully this rustic pub will re-open one day. The village hall also functions as a bunkhouse offering accommodation for groups. The local church is the St. Johns. A number of mines can be visited here including South Tynedale Mine for which permission from the friendly landowner can be obtained. Nenthead with it's mines is nearby and the market town of Alston is four mines (6km) away. Garrigill should not be confused with nearby Galligill in the Nent Valley. BACK |
